Horse Riding in the Sacred Valley of the Incas

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY - EXPERINCED RIDERS WELCOME

Sacred valley of the incasWe own special mountain bred horses descended from Spanish Barbs brought from Spain in the 1500s...Crossed with the comfortable but less sure-footed Paso breed our mountain horses give a strong, comfortable ride with greater endurance, stability and reliability needed for steep Inca trails. We raise and train horses at our ranch at Lamay in the Sacred Valley. The horses are no nonsense, experienced, sure-footed, non gaited mountain trail horses affording a secure, comfortable ride on steep pathways. Our tack consists of comfortable padded, American-style saddles based on US cavalry design, with locally made and traditional Peruvian stirrups and reins. We provide large water-proof saddle bags for all riders. Extensive riding experience is not a prerequisite but due to the steep rugged terrain, prior familiarity around horses is recommended. However we do teach the basics required

Day 2:

Stables at LamayA leisurely hearty breakfast with fresh brewed coffee, toast and eggs. Leaving the Urubamba Boutique Lodge we take the short drive to the stable to be reunited with your rested horse. To-day we ride to the little known spectacular Inca ruins of Huchuy-Cusco. Starting in Lamay we head up to the ruins via a wide Andean valley. This is a fascinating ride initially along the Urubamba river and then a gradual ascent to a small plateau commanding a magnificent view of the Sacred Valley of the Incas from 800 meters above the valley floor. This is regarded as the third most important Inca site in the Sacred Valley after Ollantaytambo and Pisac. The main attraction at Huchuy Cusco is a great Inca Hall, known as a kallanka, and it measures almost 40 m in length. The hall is a two-story structure with an adobe top. Outside the hall are Inca terraces, a gate, and some smaller structures. Huchuy Cusco is thought to be the royal palace of Caquia Jaquijahuana. The ruins are of stone and adobe. This was probably a regional administrative center. As our horses rest and gaze and enjoying a picnic lunch we have plenty of time to enjoy a gourmet lunch, the view and explore the ruins before riding down to the valley floor at Calca where our van will be waiting to drive us to our hotel in Cusco or Urubamba or Pisac – your choice.
